There was only a question of time until the first software to save music from Spotify would leak out. People have been doing this for quite some time. Remeber, everything that has a signal can be replicated in one way or another. Spotify is also kind enough to push meta info from the song so creating an application that captures the signal, enters song meta data and cuts when it is done is really not that hard.
A piece of software capturing the stream has been released on a Swedish forum. It is run independently of Spotify and saves each music stream in .ogg format with correct name and title. People are now debating whether Spotify can identify this piece of software or if it remains transparent.
Such behaviour is naturally prohibited in the Spotify user agreement as it more or less destroys the license model between Spotify and the owners. I guess it will take quite some time until Spotify users are actually allowed to both stream and save. So basically, someone enabled a solution where one can download spotify music to ipod which is being requested by many users.
What do you guys think? Is Spotify able to identify what’s being run in memory? Or more importantly, is it morally right to make a copy of the music you paid a license fee to enjoy even it it violates the terms? Please give me your feedback.

I found this conversation thread because I google’d “Spotify Music Capture” so I am not exactly “coming to the table with clean hands”, however in slight mitigation I only discovered Spotify tonight and whilst the inner music criminal within me immediately wondered whether I could capture the music for my iPod, the more I think about this particular issue, I realise that for the first time I actually feel bad for even thinking about ripping off music from this site, Spotify is a excellent site with an amazing selection of music, given that I was recently sitting by a hotel pool in Oman in the middle of nowhere with a solid 2MB download wifi connection, that combined with the sort of Ultra light PC’s made by Sony and Asus why do I need an iPod ?
Roll on Spotify for my Blackberry Bold and I’d pay £20 per month !
I’ve been using spotify for a while now and I’m really pleased with the whole solution. I’m no longer a “music pirate”. Not that I ever was one …
With services like this I think the RIAA should be pleased.
But I do miss the opportunity to bring the music to my car and on my windows mobile. And I miss a good equalizer function.
but i’m gonna stick with spotify – it suits me
The industry will one day soon realise that a recording is just an advert for the live performance. They want huge money to see a live performance!
The advert should be free.
If record companies cant make any money from the recordings then they should go into show business.
If it can be done, it will be done. You can’t uninvent things. The music industry will have to find another way of adding value to what they do that people will want to pay for, or they will go out of business, like stagecoaches. If I can record a tune off spotify in order to play it in the car, I will.
Just record the stream as it comes out of your soundcard.
I’m a paying Spotify user. What difference does it make if I capture the audio stream? For one, I will put less load on the Spotify servers. That should be a good thing, right?
Haven’t actually tried capturing audio from Spotify though. I still download music from file sharing networks. And sometimes I buy music on CD. Access is crucial. When the industry cannot deliver (or decides to deliver at fantasy prices), I find another way.
Also, I spent close to $4000 on my sound system and I expect a high quality recording when I buy music, not something where the dynamic range of the audio has been compressed for advertising purposes.

The common programs used to save music requires spotify to play the music and records whatever the speakers are playing. This take a lot of time when you want to save 90 hours of music, and spotify must be turned on. This makes it simple to control because it’s not an urgent problem and not a lot of music will be stored this way, so the company will have plenty of ime to work on o method of detection.
However, the problem is the cache memory. Spotify codes all the tracks into .file files that run as dll programs and gives a playback with the spotify codec. If this codec is copyed, user will be able to save entire playlists in seconds without having the client running.
I do not work with these programs, but I know someone will figure it out sooner or later, and that’s when the lisence will be completly crushed buy primerally younger users.

I also use a weblog and am really looking to alter about the theme, nevertheless am scared to death to mess with it for fear on the search engines punishing me. I’m very new to all of this …so i am just not positive precisely the way to try to to it all yet. I’ll just retain working on it a single day at a time Gives thanks for any support you can offer here
Hi Shelton,
I am sorry but I do not really understand your question. Which menu bar are you referring to?
For this site, I am using WordPress hosted by WordPress and the theme “Misty Look”. On a general note, do not ever be afraid to experiment – it is the way forward.
